Ham And Bean Soup

This is my favorite bean soup recipe.  It has turnips (substituted for the parsnips the recipe calls for), onions, carrots, great northern beans, garlic and some hot pepper. I put a ham bone in it as well as some chunked ham.  Tomorrow I will fix some cornbread to go with it…too tired tonight.

Yum, we like it.

  1. I may try this, I stuck my ham bone from the Christmas ham in the freezer for bean soup and this is as good as any 🙂 thanks!

  2. I love ham and bean soup!!! I agree you have to have cornbread!

  3. HI,
I never would have thought to use turnips. Thanks for visiting me. I’m going to look and see what else I can find on your blog now.

    Blessings,

  4. Hi everyone, If you like a good bean soup with garlic and a bit of spice, you will not be disappointed with this recipe. Spice it up with more red pepper or hot sauce. I was out of hot sauce, so I used a bit of red pepper. 3 cups of chopped turnips, 2 cups of chopped carrots and 1 cup of chopped onions to 1 1/2 cups of dried beans, put directly into crockpot with 5 cups of water, 2 minced garlic cloves (I may have cut back on the garlic a bit as it seems a bit much to my taste), some salt and pepper too along with your ham bone or ham. After 6-7 hours on high, you have supper!

  5. I’m glad I checked back here, I was going to ask you for specifics on your soup 🙂
